Real Madrid keen to sign Cristiano Ronaldo’s successor

Florentino Perez

19-year-old prodigy, Joao Felix has been tipped to be the next ‘Cristiano Ronaldo’ and has also impressed various European giants. The Benfica midfielder is said to have impressed Spanish giants Real Madrid, with Spanish outlet AS claiming that the club is very interested to capture his signature.

Felix is set to join an elite set of players that includes Bernardo Silva, Angel di Maria and David Luiz as Benfica’s finest Academy graduates. The Portuguese player has been one of the most phenomenal player for Benfica’s youth team and has also made his name with the senior squad.

The 19-year-old joined Benfica in 2015 from Padrones FC, and has scored 8 times in 20 games across all competitions so far this term.

Felix, who was given the name of ‘Hurrican Felix’, has been a major attraction for scouts from big European clubs including Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

However, AS now believes that the defending European champions, Real Madrid, are keen to sign the 19-year-old midfielder, ever since Felix helped destroy Guti’s under-19 squad in the UEFA Youth League semi-finals in 2016-17 season.

Moreover, the Spanish outlet believes that Benfica reportedly received a huge bid of €60 million from an unnamed Premier League club this winter window. Subsequently, Benfica has increased the wages of the 19-year-old, and set his release clause at a massive €120 million.

Felix’s contract with Benfica runs until 2023, but AS reveals that the club is already interested in renewing the contract and further giving a rise to his release clause to lock it at €200 million. Nevertheless, the Los Blancos are confident that they will be able to strike up a deal with the Portuguese giants this summer.

Real Madrid are in a massive requirement of reinforcements up front following the departure of Portuguese stalwart, Cristiano Ronaldo. However, what will be interesting to see is whether Florentino Perez opts to invest in the future by purchasing Felix or go for an already established name.
